It has been 56 years since England won a last major football tournament. The venue of the same was Wembley and the opponents were West Germany. Today 56 years later, the English Women's Football Team has won the UEFA Women's Championship in Wembley against Germany and has ended the country's long trophy drought. Last year the men's team reached the final of the European Championship, but were beaten by the Italians in their own backyard.
However the women's team went a step further and has brought the trophy back home. Furthermore it is pertinent to note that the hosts [England] remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. In the group stage they beat Austria, Norway and Northern Ireland to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament.
In the quarterfinals they came from behind and beat the title favorites Spain 2-1 in the extra-time.
The semi-final was a one sided affair as they knocked Sweden out 4-0.
In the finals, the hosts were facing heavyweights Germany. As a result everyone expected an exciting contest. And Boy. What a game it was. The English scored the opening goal as Ella Toone chipped above the goalkeeper. However the Germans [Lina Magull] scored an equalizer and the game went to extra-time. Eventually in the 110th minute of the game Chloe Kelly scored the second goal for English and the hosts were leading again. The Germans tried their best to get past the English defense. But, they failed.
When the final whistle was blown, Wembley erupted in joy. After all the trophy has come back home.
